Cancer Workflow

Image

Before a cancer referral is registered in the CIP-API, the patient's consent/patient choice is verified for each individual in the referral.

  • If any patient in the referral lacks appropriate consent, the referral will be blocked and will not appear in the Interpretation Portal.
  • The referral will also not be dispatched to any Decision Support System (DSS).

Dispatching to the DSS

Once successfully loaded into the DSS, the referral moves to the To Be Reviewed tab, and the DSS link becomes active on the case page.

Unlike rare disease referrals, GMS cancer referrals are registered in the Interpretation Portal with a Summary of Findings automatically generated by the Bioinformatics pipeline.

For this reason, cancer referrals appear initially in the Pending Outcomes tab until they are successfully dispatched to the Cancer DSS. Upon loading into the Cancer DSS (which should occur automatically), the referral moves to the To Be Reviewed tab.

If the referral fails to load (e.g., due to a technical issue), it will remain in the Pending Outcomes tab.

At this stage, Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLHs) are encouraged to begin reviewing the referral.

Closing Cases

When a case is closed in the Cancer DSS (cDSS), it is automatically marked as closed in the Interpretation Portal.

Alternatively, users can complete the Cancer Referral Feedback form in the Portal. Once submitted, the referral will move to the Reported Cases tab.

If a case has already been closed in the cDSS, the Feedback form in the Portal will no longer be available.

As with rare disease referrals, once a cancer referral has remained in the Reported Cases tab for more than three months, the link out to the DSS will be disabled.
